Meaning of this name is unknown.
Snr Beaumont says: The name “Arneaud” is derived from the name “Arnaud” which was a name of significance throughout the 14th century. During the late Capetians Dynasty, Philip V (Younger Brother of Louis X) became King of France and Navarre, following the Posthumous ruling of John I. During Philip’s reign, Philip betrothed a fellow Sister to the House of Valois, Arnaud. Due to the direct conflict between the two Houses, the name Arnaud had to be hidden from the Church before the names could be joined. To get around this, Philip changed his Family name from Arnaud to Arn-e-aud. This meant that, in the eyes of the church, the two families could be united but under the same phonetic name, so that to remove any concern of the people. Sadly this was short lived as the untimely death of Philip resulted in Charles IV unveiling the deceit that was put upon the family, which later gave him the name “Charles the fair” as the family name was put in to wars with the Valois which triumphed and succeeded to become the new rulers under the Valois Dynasty. The Arneaud family name continued under the House of Valois as the crown was passed to Philip VI, long in to the 17th century where the ruling under the House of Bonaparte (the second empire) chaged the seating of the crown altogether. The family name Arnaud, however, lost aristocracy and was lowered to ranking of given-name only.
