A "Kaluger" is a type of priest; I have encountered two references: (1) From Wikipedia ("Kalugerovo"): "Another legend says that at the beginning of the 1st millennium AD monks (kalugers) funded the Christian monastery St. Nicholas, around which was formed the present village." (2) From "Witchcraft Continued", Blecourt and Davies (p.177): "people went to the kaluger mainly to ask for curses or to have a mass said as maleficium, and we have abundant data about the firm conviction in the effectiveness of the kalugers' rites." They are described as more powerful than the Catholic or other priests who can, by their rites, take the lives of others. c.150 years ago my ancestor, a 'Magyar' named Theriza Kalugyer, lived in Szatmar, Austria-Hungary, now NW Romania. Not too far away in Bihor county is the Carpinet commune, which contains a village called "Calugari (Kalugyer)" (Wiki: Carpinet).
